It's been a busy offseason for Texas Tech softball now under the new leadership of head coach Gerry Glasco and a revamped roster preparing for what hopes to be a historic season for the Red Raiders in 2025. But the staff isn't sleeping on the future either as they received their first two class of 2026 commits in Top 100 players Avery Howerton and Sydona "SJ" Meiser this past week. We asked both what led them to locking it in with Texas Tech, learn that and more about each of them below.
Avery Howerton, RHP/OF | Whitesboro, Texas
An Extra Innings Top 100 All-American, Howerton is a utility player that has produced as a hitter and pitcher during her already impressive high school career. At the plate she holds a career .505 batting average with 20 doubles, 10 triples, 22 home runs and 92 RBI, while posting a 1.41 ERA in the circle with 335 strikeouts across 272.2 innings during her two year high school career thus far. In 2024 she helped Whitesboro to the State Championship game, where they lost a thriller in 11-innings to Coahoma, tying the longest state title game in Texas HS 3A history. Howerton pitched the full game, striking out six while also going 3-for-6 at the plate with a double, two runs scored and three RBI. She followed that up with a summer playing with Texas Glory where they went on to win the 16U Alliance Fastpitch National Championship.
"I think it’s really exciting what Coach Glasco and his staff are building at Texas Tech." Howerton told Seeing Scarlet on what led her to choosing Texas Tech. "All of the coaches made Lubbock feel like home instantly. I love the feeling of family that they have and I love Coach Glasco’s passion for hitting!"
Sydona "SJ" Meiser, 1B/OF | Keller, Texas
Texas Tech softball and athletics in general has seen stars come from Keller, Texas to Lubbock before....has it found another in Keller's SJ Meiser? The Extra Innings Elite Top 100 1B/OF, as a sophomore in 2024, helped Keller to a perfect 12-0 District record and all the way to the 6A Regional Final where the fell to Denton Guyer. In her varsity high school career thus far she has a .382 average with 8 doubles, 4 triples, 3 home runs and 33 RBI. Meiser is also a teammate of Howerton's on Texas Glory.
"I had the opportunity to be around Coach Glasco at softball camps the past couple of years," Meiser told Seeing Scarlet. "The coaching staff and players that were around him always seemed happy and they always made me feel welcome. When I came to Lubbock to visit Texas Tech it immediately just felt like a family. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to play the sport I love in an atmosphere that feels like home."
