Texas Tech Soccer Takes Down No. 12 Oklahoma State + Blackburn Makes History

Texas Tech went on the road to Stillwater and took down the No. 12 team in the country with poise, patience and confidence. Goals from Kaitlyn Giametta and Ashleigh Williams got the job done and Macy Blackburn was officially goated with an assist in this one that moved her into first place ALL-TIME for career assists at Texas Tech. She still has 1.5 seasons left to play (lol.)

The game started with the Cowgirls controlling possession and attack for about the first 20 minutes or so but Texas Tech was able to fight off any of their potentially dangerous threats and sprinkle in some of their own. A sign of growth from their early season Top 25 road matchups where those first 20 sniped them.

While Texas Tech showed flashes in those first 20, they just couldn't quite find the touch all the way through the build up. But that's the sport. It can break teams in that way if you let it but something that has impressed about a fairly young group this season is they seem to be taking on an "ok bet" attitude to fight the current and trust that their work will pay off. As the saying goes: You can't get bored with executing. It's early but thus far in conference it's that attitude that has helped them to a 2-0-1 Big 12 record.

Game Vibes:

  • The announcers were lovely and could not shut up about Macy Blackburn, but can we blame them? IT'S MACY FRICKEN BLACKBURN.

  • Peyton Parsons continues to keep teams honest by putting these rocket launches on tape. This one was just off the mark but you'll see later why teams fearing our ability to shoot from deep matters. KEEP KNOCKING.

  • Molly Scurcenski is a... Capital D, Capital A, Capital W, Capital G...DAWG!

  • A list of famous artists: Leonardo da Vinci, Pablo Picasso...... SKYLAR HAASE, TAYLOR ZDROJEWSKI, KAITLYN GIAMETTA. This goal was ART. The defense was so scared Skylar was going to hack from deep (we know she can, see Utah) three defenders get off their line to chase her at the top of the box. She sees Z sneaking down the left and sends a beaut of a ball through. Then Z shows the same patience and threads the needle to Bug for a sliding shot that had the keeper stuck in quick sand.

  • Texas Tech goes into halftime up 1-0 on a goal so pretty it made the skies open up and cry so the game was delayed for about an hour (time ceases to exist it could have been 10 minutes idk.) But according to head coach Tom Stone the vibes were right in the locker room as whoever was running the aux had it "sounding like Downtown Dallas on a Friday night." YOU CAN'T MAKE US HATE THIS TEAM. VIBES.

  • Their rave in the locker room had them feeling fresh because Texas Tech came out en fuego, peddle full down to start the second half and almost had a goal in the first five minutes.

  • They kept on knocking and that goal did come off a run from Macy Blackburn (hello record breaking assist), down to Katilyn Giametta (HAVE A GAME!) who sent the perfect ball in to Ashleigh Williams and the senior did what she does on balls in the box: FINISHED IT WITH CLASS!

  • Shortly after this Williams nearly got a brace to put the Red Raiders up 3-0 on a shot outside the box but credit to OSU's Gordon in goal who showed why she made it through the entirety of non-con without allowing a goal with a beaut of a jump save to hit it over the bar. Also shoutout Texas Tech freshman Alana Harry who sent a magical ball through the defense to set Williams up for the launch.

  • From here Texas Tech had firm control on the game but as expected from a good team, Ok State didn't go down without a fight and our backline continued to be up to the task as Peyton Annen, Cassie Taylor (give her Big 12 Defender of the Week, do it we dare you), Faith Nguyen (heck with it give her keeper of the week too) and the whole squad were ready for the moment.

  • Things got a bit squirrelly in the final 10 minutes as games in this scenario tend to do, particularly after OSU put in an extra attacker up front in place of a defender. As Coach Stone noted after the game there are certainly things to clean up in that scrum but in the end we kept them off the board and nabbed a crucial 2-0 road win to stay in the hunt.

Next up, the road tests keep on coming as this group looks to finish off a tough 4 out of 5 away games to start Big 12 play with two more this week at Kansas State (9/26) and at Houston (9/29.) WE FIGHT!
