Sam Courtwright is entering her sophomore season for the Texas Tech Red Raiders and already has a story that you see in the movies.
As a true freshman, Sam played and started in all 23 matches. Sam's first year for Texas Tech Soccer was a historic 2023 season that ended with the Red Raiders bringing UNC to Lubbock in the third round of the NCAA tournament. Sam's accomplishments on the field are expected as much as they are earned by her creative and freeing-play style. All of her stats compliment her journey to becoming a Red Raider, which includes the coolest recruitment...prank?
"I think a week or two after my visit, I texted Tom and said 'Hey, can we talk?'"
The next morning, Sam proceeds to tell her dad that she NOT ONLY wants to commit to Texas Tech, but wants to get to Lubbock ASAP to tell Tom Stone the news in person...only after sending that ominous text!
So in true Sam fashion, she shows up to the John Walker to surprise head coach, Tom Stone, with the news and now we get to witness Sam Courtwright play magical soccer for the Scarlet and Black. ( https://x.com/GCourtwright/status/1446465946407915520 )
All within her freshman year, Sam was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year, Top Drawer Freshman All-American, First Team All-Midwest and the list goes on. If you're unfamiliar of what these stats mean, take our word that Sam is a phenomenal soccer player. She earned these accomplishments by playing a brand of soccer that's refreshing and exhilarating.
Sam's story continues to flourish as she immediately became a pillar of this team and has the full support to continue to play her style of footy. Texas Tech Soccer begins their season against Denver, tomorrow, August 8th. We could continue to type out every highlight from this interview, but y'all should just go watch it for yourself. Every question is met with an answer you weren't expecting, but so happy to hear. Lots of love to you, Sam!
"There's no one else I'd rather play for. Especially him (Tom Stone) giving me that confidence and freedom my freshman year."
