Bears Down, Guns Up: Texas Tech Soccer Beats Baylor 1-0 to Win 5th Straight

In front of the largest crowd (1,410) of the season and sixth largest all-time at John Walker, Texas Tech Soccer gritted their way to a 1-0 win over in-state foe Baylor. Ashleigh Williams found the game winner in the 61st minute moving her into a tie for second ALL-TIME at Texas Tech alongside Kirsten Davis with 16 career game winning goals. BIG time play in a BIG time moment from the senior.

Perhaps it was playing in Lubbock for the first time since early September or simply playing a tough, physical athletic Baylor team - either or Texas Tech looked a bit tense at times in this leading to some shots they are more than capable of squaring up go off target. On the flip side, while the finishing wasn't there they didn't let it deter them from relentlessly getting into the box and finding chance after chance as Texas Tech went into the half leading Baylor 8-1 in total shots.

Just after the hour mark of the game it was Knock knock, Ashleigh Williams o'clock and the senior does what she has done so so many times in her Red Raider career to get the goal when this team needs it most. One shot on the night and one goal - THAT'S HOW YOU DO THAT!

Game Vibes:

⛽️ FROM THE JUMP Ashleigh Williams was pressuring Baylor into mishit passes or outright just winning the ball with physical challenges at the midfield or anywhere we needed her early and often. Empty the tank is the teams motto and Williams did that and more.

📈 Taylor Zdrojewski didn't find the net in this one but her presence was still evident as her play continues to flash. She had one look early she probably wants back that went off target but kept the Baylor keeper honest on some others getting off 5 shots on the night. She followed Williams lead up top as well defensively using her physicality to win balls all night - even when the refs got duped a bit by her strength and slapped her with some silly fouls. Comedy really.

😮‍💨 Kaitlyn "Bug" Giametta was a spark once again off the bench getting two shots off in minutes after entering. As was the theme early for the team as a whole those were a bit off target or without enough pace, but her energy was evident and that work paid off in the second half as she is who earned her fourth assist of the year on the Williams game winner. A cross field ball past multiple defenders right to a lethal attacker's foot in rhythm at the front of the box? CHILL! an excuse to post this goal again? fine watch the pass over from Bug to start this off. MINT

🐂 Cassie Taylor. Cassie Taylor. Cassie Taylor. I don't know what else to say but CASSIE MF TAYLOR. West Texas Tough. Got smashed between a Baylor attacker and Nguyen in the box to help stop a threat and fought through the pain to keep on trucking stalling attack after attack all night. If she chooses to continue soccer after college some pro team next year is going to find themselves saying - we got the steal of the offseason, bookmark it.

🐾 Faith Nguyen is a DAWG on Red Bull and continues to throw her body into the fray or sit back and make the "easy" play, whatever the moment calls for she's in there. She is just fun to watch play soccer, point period. A newcomer this year, the trust between her and the backline also continues to grow as you can see in the clips below (and these highlights came solely from the last 15 minute scrum.)

Next Up: Texas Tech hosts No. 14 Colorado 7pm on Thursday October 10th. The Buffalos (Bison but I digress) head into Lubbock with red in their eyes following a loss to No. 22 TCU at home on Saturday. Another big time opportunity awaits, BE THERE, BE LOUD LUBBOCK!
